QQQ -4.8% vs SPY -1.0% over 20 days (-3.7 pts). The rest of the market is outrunning mega-caps.
Watch: SPY vs QQQ divergence: mega-cap concentration vs market breadth.
Why it's here
SPY is the S&P 500, the benchmark for US stocks. QQQ is the Nasdaq 100, which is dominated by a handful of giant tech companies. Comparing the two tells you whether the whole market is moving or just a few mega-caps.
How to read it
Both lines start at 0% on the left. If they move together, the move is broad. QQQ well above SPY means narrow leadership: index gains depend on a few names, which is fragile. QQQ well below SPY means money is rotating out of mega-cap tech. The signal flags a gap of more than 3 points over 20 days.

IWM -5.1% vs SPY -1.0% over 20 days (-4.0 pts). Small caps lagging: a higher-probability shorting environment.
IWM holds the Russell 2000: smaller US companies that borrow more and depend on the domestic economy. They are the first to benefit when investors are willing to take risk, and the first to suffer when they're not.
How to read it
IWM above SPY means healthy risk appetite and broad participation. IWM falling behind while SPY holds up means the rally rests on large caps only, which tends to be fragile and gives a better environment for shorts. The signal flags IWM trailing SPY by more than 3 points over 20 days.

HYG -0.6% vs SPY -1.8% over 10 days. HY spread +63 bps over 20 days.
Watch: HYG falling while equities rise = underlying liquidity squeeze.
Why it's here
Bond investors are usually more cautious than stock investors and often see trouble first. HYG holds high-yield (junk) corporate bonds. The HY spread is the extra yield those bonds pay over Treasuries: the price lenders charge for corporate risk.
How to read it
HYG rising with stocks means credit confirms the rally. HYG falling while SPY rises means stocks are going up without credit behind them, a sign liquidity is tightening underneath. A rising spread (in bps) means lenders want more to take risk. Flags: HYG down 0.5%+ while SPY is up 0.5%+ over 10 days, or the spread up 25+ bps over 20 days.

TLT -2.0% vs SPY -1.0% over 20 days. 30Y yield +14 bps.
Watch: TLT falling with stocks = rates-driven selloff; TLT rising as stocks fall = flight to safety.
Why it's here
TLT holds 20+ year Treasuries, and its price moves opposite to long-term yields. Long yields set mortgage and corporate borrowing costs and the rate used to value stocks. Normally bonds rise when stocks fall, cushioning portfolios.
How to read it
TLT up while stocks fall is a normal flight to safety. Both falling together is a rates-driven selloff with nowhere to hide. The 30Y yield is shown directly; a rise of 25+ bps in 20 days puts pressure on stock valuations.

Jul 22Oct 20
USO +5.7% over 5 days, +12.3% over 20.
Watch: Oil spikes feed inflation and long yields; sharp drops signal a demand / growth scare.
Why it's here
Oil feeds into transport, manufacturing and consumer prices, so big moves shift inflation, Fed expectations and consumer spending. USO tracks front-month WTI futures and is live. WTI and Brent are spot prices per barrel (EIA via FRED) and run a few days behind.
How to read it
USO pulling far above SPY means energy costs are squeezing the economy. A jump of 8%+ in 5 days is a shock; +15% over 20 days is a spike, +8% is rising. A drop of 15%+ often signals demand or growth fears. A wide gap between Brent and WTI points to global supply stress. USO's % moves can differ from spot because of futures roll costs.

VIX 18.62 vs Triple B 18.50: 0.12 above. Immediate stress: a cautious backdrop for stocks.
Watch: Spot VIX above Triple B = immediate stress, cautious backdrop; below = calmer, more favorable for stocks.
Why it's here
Triple B is the midpoint of the front two monthly VIX futures: (first month + second month) / 2. It gives spot VIX a moving benchmark set by the futures market, instead of a fixed rule like "VIX above 20 is bad". It's a market-condition filter for the S&P 500 backdrop, not a buy/sell signal.
How to read it
Spot VIX below the Triple B line means less immediate stress and a more favorable backdrop for stocks. Above it means more immediate stress: be cautious or bearish. A cross (within the last 3 days) is a possible change in conditions; look for confirmation in stock prices. The contracts roll on each monthly expiration: once the front month expires, the next two monthly contracts are used. Futures prices are Cboe's delayed quotes.

VIX 18.62 (+21.9% over 5 days), VVIX +26.8%. Fear is picking up fast from a low level.
Watch: VVIX expanding ahead of VIX = institutional tail-hedging active.
Why it's here
VIX is the market's expected volatility for the next 30 days, priced from S&P 500 options: the "fear gauge". VVIX is the volatility of VIX itself, i.e. how much traders pay to protect against sudden VIX jumps. Big funds often buy that protection before trouble shows up in VIX.
How to read it
VIX under ~15 is calm, 20+ is elevated, 30+ is stress. VVIX rising 10%+ in 5 days while VIX stays flat means someone is paying up for crash protection, an early warning. VIX jumping 20%+ in 5 days from a low level means fear is picking up quickly.

GLD -5.4%, TLT -2.0% over 20 days.
Watch: Gold breaking out against rising long-end Treasury yields (TLT).
Why it's here
Gold pays no interest, so it usually competes with bonds: when yields rise, gold tends to fall. When gold rises even as long-term yields rise (TLT falling), investors are buying it as protection against debasement, deficits or loss of confidence, not because rates are easing.
How to read it
GLD at a new 60-day high while TLT falls is a debasement bid (caution). GLD rising together with TLT is an ordinary falling-rates move. GLD falling with TLT means rising real yields are pulling both down.
AI spending fears hit tech before Meta, Tesla
Wed Oct 21
The Nasdaq fell 4.48% last week on worries over AI data-center spending and financing, and semis and neocloud names led futures lower again today. Tesla, Meta and IBM report Wed Oct 21, and their capex outlooks could deepen the mega-cap breakdown.
September CPI rose 0.6% to 3.7% year over year after the Fed's September hike, and most officials projected one more quarter-point hike this year. The 10-year back above 5.1% is hitting utilities, banks and homebuilders ahead of the Oct 28 decision.
Brent was at $110.10 Monday, and Houthi strikes pushed oil higher into the close. Oil above $100 feeds headline inflation and squeezes consumers and margins, which strengthens the case for more Fed tightening.
The high-yield option-adjusted spread was 3.23% on Oct 15, and CNBC flagged junk bonds as flashing yellow on Oct 9. Wider spreads raise refinancing costs for leveraged small caps and often show up before equity drawdowns.
September payrolls rose just 29,000, July was revised to -10,000, and unemployment climbed to 4.2%. A weakening labor market alongside 3.7% inflation is a stagflation setup that hurts cyclicals and small caps.
